Jack Douglas replying to Adám
I added a bit of gap (I though 10px looked a bit too big but might come round to it)
Adám replying to Jack Douglas
Maybe also space the kind label a bit further from the tags, e.g. `.kind{margin-right:10px;}`:
![blob](/image?hash=a8416d3b2417e6b54eefa1dbdf06dc52d440bc65c4cca7166c934484372caa60)
Jack Douglas replying to Adám
Thanks :) yes you are right and we need that stars to be visible without hover. if I can get them to not look terrible on the left I'll put them there
James Douglas replying to Monica
I've now released the update, and to change the white (or black) colours you need this style:
```
html {
  --rgb-white: 252,215,215 !important;
}
```
Adám replying to Jack Douglas
@Jack I'm sorry for your loss, but this is much better. However, only showing OP star count on hover is strange, imo. And on Goce Golf, it is a real loss of functionality, as the star count is critical. Why not move it down above the answer counts and simply push the type/tags a bit right?
Monica replying to samcarter
Oh, we didn't drop the post types! I totally missed that, even with the (minor) difference in visual styling.
Jack Douglas
but on Code Golf that might be too much (as every question has a label)
Jack Douglas

Jack Douglas
we experimented with giving them a 'highlight' background colour
Jack Douglas
the type labels are similar to tags conceptually, at least in my mind
Jack Douglas
I thought that might be going in the wrong direction regarding emphasis
Jack Douglas
we could have made the label taller instead
Jack Douglas replying to Adám
it looked bad once we merged the shaded bar with the rest of the question section
Adám replying to samcarter
Oh, I just noticed that now. Who not do it used to be on Code Golf? I liked that.
samcarter replying to Jack Douglas
keep them. I think showing them only sometimes would be confusing
samcarter replying to Jack Douglas
Ah, the joy of large displays - I only vaguely remember how nice this was now that the lockdown means working from home with a tiny laptop screen :(
Jack Douglas
they could possibly appear *only* when the screen is wide but that might be getting too fancy
Jack Douglas replying to samcarter
They can be useful when the screen is wide:

samcarter
And just a thought about post types: do they actually belong in the same row as tags or would it make sense to put them in front of after the title?
samcarter
Are the horizontal lines between the answers necessary?
samcarter
I like the new light background a lot! Looks very modern and clean!
Monica
I don't have a strong opinion on differentiating the title and answer summary or not, just on the bright whiteness of the whole page. :-)
Monica replying to Jack Douglas
Ah, so it's actually the change to the answers list that I'm reacting to. Thanks.
Jack Douglas
https://topanswers.xyz/meta?q=739#a860
Jack Douglas replying to Monica
yes for the top half; the bottom half was a shaded bar just beneath the title
Monica
Were question titles always so white-backgroundy? It feels like that changed but I didn't keep a screenshot of the older layout.
Monica
I liked the darker gray background (that still shows at the top of the question list and the bottom of the chat panel), but I could be reacting to the change and not to the color itself.
Paul White replying to James Douglas
Better
Jack Douglas replying to Adám
btw the 'new community' post is now replaced with a new post type on meta
Josh Darnell replying to Jack Douglas
Oh I didn't think at all about question votes (can you tell I spend most of my time on the databases site?).
Adám replying to Jack Douglas
I suppose this is the gist of the site, to find the top answer of everything.
Josh Darnell replying to Adám
Oh weird! It's the image URL for https://xkcd.com/1378/
Adám replying to Josh Darnell
I get a loading spinner on that.
Jack Douglas replying to Josh Darnell
it's tricky with the question when there are question votes too but we may be able to work something out (perhaps by boxing the stars in with a border to align with the tags and 'type' label)
Josh Darnell
![Ok, plan B: Fly a kite into the blades, with a rock in a sling dangling below it, and create the world's largest trebuchet.](https://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/turbine.png)
Josh Darnell
I also like the Top Answer indicator, but agree with the rest that stars maybe makes better sense afterwards.
Josh Darnell replying to Jack Douglas
lol
Jack Douglas replying to Monica
I'm very attached to the 'Top Answer' text (not particularly to the 'Answer #n' text, that was an afterthought)
Josh Darnell replying to James Douglas
I'm a big fan of the spacing. I don't know about the lighter background - I have no problem it personally.
Jack Douglas
but eventually even that will change :)
Jack Douglas
it also looks pants
Jack Douglas replying to Josh Darnell
very good point, thanks
Josh Darnell
The tagging dropdown goes off screen now - especially on posts that don't currently have any tags, or only have one short tag.

How does this look? Bigger gaps but lighter background
Monica replying to Adám
There've been cases of 6-8 hours here, and just a bit ago we saw 6-8 minutes. TA is not SE. :-)
Monica replying to James Douglas
Thank you!
James Douglas replying to Monica
I'll do it today : )
Adám
6-8 days, I presume.
Monica replying to Jack Douglas
Does "some time soon" mean a day or two, or less soon? Not trying to nag; if it's going to be days I might want to brute-force the CSS overrides in the meantime.
Josh Darnell replying to Jack Douglas
LOL thanks Jack.
Monica replying to Adám
I like that. I don't find the "answer N" text helpful in a list that's already ordered.
Jack Douglas replying to Monica
yes exactly
James Douglas replying to Adám
You're right, having them on the left is logically better, so we would move them there if we could make them look nice there.
Monica replying to Jack Douglas
interesting! Setting that will just change the "white" color and not affect anything else? (Reverse video will involve a corresponding rgb-black?)
Adám
As it is now, the misalignment of stars makes it uncomfortable to compare them.
Monica replying to Adám
Not generally; it's hard to avoid breaking other things (like, for example, text might look fine but somebody forgot to fix links including visited). And plain old inverse video is kind of hard to read; when I use darkish themes that I can customize, I end up with *almost* white on dark gray, or (better) a light tan on a dark brown. This is all personal quirk I know. But if I could just tone down all the white a bit, it wouldn't break anything else and I'd be good.
Jack Douglas replying to Josh Darnell
could be a new career @Josh :)
Adám replying to James Douglas
Since the stars relate to the post and not the poster, would it not be a good idea to move the star count to the far left and have it thus replace the "Answer #N" text?
Jack Douglas
we'll need that so we can support dark mode by switching white and black
Jack Douglas replying to Monica
at some point soon there will be a css variable (--rgb-white) which you'll be able to override with a userscript
Josh Darnell replying to James Douglas
Nice!
Monica replying to James Douglas
Thanks!
Adám replying to Monica
Do you like dark themes?
James Douglas
Latest release (needs refresh): both the icons and text are shown without hover
Monica
Err, should I put that into a support post? (Do we have support posts?)
Monica
@Jack I could presumably brave the developer tools and my inadequate knowledge of CSS and dig this info out eventually, but I'm hoping you'll take pity on me and just tell me. What selectors/classes/IDs/whatever (the things on the left half of a CSS style blob) give me access to the background color on everything that's white on the question list and question pages? (Chat messages too if you can.) I'm photosensitive and the recent changes -- which I agree are good -- have pushed me over the edge. I have a flaky userscript that sometimes (but not always) softens bright white backgrounds; it doesn't seem to work here (sometimes works in chat; dunno what's up).
Josh Darnell
I'm no designer though.

@Jack The 6px margin is a little small to me - the question list looks like kind of a"wall of text." Doubling to 12px looks better to me.
Josh Darnell
I like to scan down the question list to see if there are any new Q's and A's from folks that I know write particularly interesting content.
Monica replying to Adám
(1) When I'm looking for my answer to something (e.g. because I want to update it). (2) It helps with recognizing new posts and especially new contributors.
Josh Darnell replying to Adám
Yes.
Adám replying to Monica
Is it really important who wrote what?
Monica replying to Adám
Avatars without names would be a significant accessibility downgrade for me. :-( (The avatars are too small for me to distinguish many of them.) CC @Jack
Adám
On competitive sites, it makes perfect sense, but for example for the "new community requests" post, all answers are orthogonal, and their ordering doesn't need any more emphasis than the star count already gives.
Adám
@Jack Is there a reason for the "Top Answer:" and "Answer #M:" labels?
samcarter replying to Jack Douglas
Yes, very happy!
Adám
I get that the padding is greater for OPs on all sides, but top/bottom and left/right don't have to match.
Adám
@Jack My OCD complains that the padding-right is bigger in the main post's box than in the answers' part:
![blob](/image?hash=f07011d81dbe7f7115b5599a157ab356bdb7ab32adababd0f6841dd12d749636)
Jack Douglas replying to samcarter
@samcarter would you be happy with avatars but no names as @Adám suggests?
Adám
(And have a bit of colour. Meta looks a bit bland now.)
Adám replying to Jack Douglas
Yeah, and if you only showed avatars without names, then things would line up nicely too.
Adám
Prompted by the above, I pressed F5. Wow.
Jack Douglas replying to samcarter
Thanks @samcarter that's exactly the kind of feedback we were hoping for :)
samcarter
I mostly like the new design of the question list. With the smaller boarders the site is no longer so dark and less lines make it look more modern. What I don't like that much is that the user avatars are only visible when hovering over the posts. This makes a) the text jump when hovering and b) I'm lazy - with the images I didn't have to read the names :)

I'll post here a meta question soon after discussing with my friends about a TA community. Then these technical questions can be answered there.
Jack Douglas
actually those questions aren't mutually exclusive
Jack Douglas
or are they entirely different communities
Jack Douglas
there are some technical questions to decide on — e.g. if you have a French language PHP site and an English language PHP site, do they have the same url?
निरंजन
Yes this is my comment. I wanted to know whether there is any language restriction for a TopAnswers community?
Jack Douglas
@निरंजन ^^^ we haven't thought about that at all yet, but I don't see why not.
