This sounds like an idea that is great concept but would be very problematic in practice. Most conversations are not rigorously threaded in that way. While the incidences of reply pings increase a lot when there's a lot of crosstalk happening, the nature of a filter means that _only pinged messages_ would get captured. In my experience, crosstalk usually dies down and a lone conversation carries on; but a filter would mask this part of the thread.

Certainly you could conceive of a function to "guess" which non-pings should be included in a ping thread, but IMO this is a lot of work for not a lot of payoff. I'd rather the core devs work on other issues. 

That being said - [the TA project is open source][1]; so anyone who cares strongly enough about this issue could conceivably draw up a proof of concept on a personal fork and PR it back to the main project for further discussion.

as a default behaviour it feels like it could provide a significant amount of confusion for users who aren't expecting it. if it does get rolled out, i'd want to see it as an "opt-in" or "beta" feature

I think it could be useful generally if is it easy to toggle on and off and is used as a quick guide — but I'm 50/50 on whether it is work the complexity/maintenance cost — that needs further cogitation!

@PeterVandivier @JackDouglas The option to filter or not would surely cover both requirements? For those situations where the filter would suuuuuck, there is no need to use it. In my situation, there are several different discussions happening at the same time and trying to find to which message each message refers is difficult. Another solution is perhaps to have three categories, A Question with associated Answers and Discussion Points. That would remove the need for a Message filter as every message would relate to a particular Discussion Point. For me, I would stop using it for a meaningful resolution of differences without some solution. If I’m the only one with this problem then I understand it would be a low priority.
