I think I'm convinced that 'monospace by default' is probably only suitable for databases.ta, so we ~~are planning to make~~ have made this a community theme setting like the colour scheme.

The default for meta.ta, tex.ta, codegolf.ta, and any new communities, is now proportional rather than monospace.

I guess it depends on the amount of data that is inserted/displayed in the table. And if I'm using lots of similar data:

0 O l 1 I L o

...then I prefer mono-spaced:

`0 O l 1 I L o`

Make tables use proportional font
David replying to Jack Douglas
Ah! I see @Adám has [already posted](https://topanswers.xyz/meta?q=683) it!
David replying to Jack Douglas
Maybe you're open to this already! I think I feel a feature request coming on.
David replying to Adám
It's a wee shame there's no markdown-it plugin for Pandoc's [`fenced-divs`](https://pandoc.org/MANUAL.html#extension-fenced_divs) extension. That would be so useful! (Use case: long answer with internal named links, although at least TA produces IDs automatically for heading text.) — Unless, that is, [this `markdown-it-container-pandoc` plugin](https://www.npmjs.com/package/markdown-it-container-pandoc?activeTab=readme) is it. Would be cool! B-) @Jack
PeterVandivier replying to Adám
ah, well i have no strong feelings then :-P
Adám replying to PeterVandivier
I'm *proposing* to adopt it from Pandoc's markdown. We don't have it here — yet.
PeterVandivier
not sure if 2x line feed needed or something?

just in posts, not in chat atm? ☝️

PeterVandivier
:::monospace
  didn't seem to work in the preview pane earlier, what about just submitting?
:::
Adám replying to PeterVandivier
That one can insert a line saying `:::monospace` and everything from then on becomes monospace until the next `:::`
PeterVandivier
for context i've been using ascii art tables for years - quit trying to faff about with markdown tables once i no longer needed to use them for jira / confluence so i'm also not super impartial either
PeterVandivier
to more directly address your question though, i'm not sure i know what you're asking.
PeterVandivier
wanted to wait til i was on my laptop to confirm the mobile bug

Adám replying to James
@PeterVandivier What do you think of `:::monospace`? ^^
Jack Douglas replying to Adám
that is easy to do — feel free to post a feature request if you think it's needed…
Adám replying to Jack Douglas
I'm aware of that, and that's why I didn't make it a feature request. Maybe we can get an extension to allow classes, so
```
:::monospace
fenced block
:::
```
renders as
```html
<div class="monospace">
<p>fenced block</p>
</div>
```
where the `.monospace` class is formatted with the site/user monospace font? [Pandoc does this.](https://pandoc.org/try/?text=%3A%3A%3Amonospace%0Afenced+block%0A%3A%3A%3A&from=markdown&to=html5)
Jack Douglas replying to Andriy M
:)
Andriy M replying to Jack Douglas
I'm not convinced either, was just curious if 'by default' meant anything. As someone already accustomed to using code blocks to present tabular data on SE, I'm very happy we have a dedicated syntax for tables here, regardless of what kind of font it's rendered with.
Jack Douglas
more idiomatic here would be to implement some sort of plugin to allow font family to be specified — easy to do but I'm not (yet) convinced there is any real need…
Jack Douglas replying to Adám
allowing even limited html means risk: https://talk.commonmark.org/t/make-commonmark-safe-by-default/1265
Jack Douglas
using `code` blocks isn't the same thing of course
Jack Douglas
by the same token there is no way of making a table monospace if proportional is the default
Jack Douglas replying to Andriy M
I don't think there is any of doing that, no
Adám
Would be nice if limited HTML worked, so one could write `<div style="font-family:monospace">markdown-for-table</div>`
John aka hot2use
added my 2 pence worth.
Andriy M
@Jack What do you mean by 'monospace *by default*'? Do you mean there's a way to make a table use a proportional font even if monospace is the default?
David replying to Adám
I can see the logc there! Although, tbf, Markdown doesn't specify *anything*, so far as I'm aware, for non-backticked text 😬, only that backticked text *is* monospace. Although, again tbf, you would typically expect a default proportional, not monospaced font. (More coffee, please!)
Adám replying to James
Maybe suggest the on the profile page where one can choose fonts, the monospace fonts should be available even for normal text.
Adám replying to David
I would. It isn't what the markdown says. Monospace is only in backticks.

James
i find monospaced much more readable, myself
David replying to Adám
You wouldn't call this a "*bug*", would you? Not sure who applied that tag..... Feature request? Discussion?
Adám replying to Jack Douglas
Possibly, but the default should be a plain text table. One can always use backticks inside the table if needed.
Jack Douglas
@Adám Does this need to be community-specific? I think monospace was initially chosen with databases.ta in mind.
