The current workflow for tags requires posting, then adding tags. This is both inconvenient for the poster (more steps) and will make later tools for post review more difficult.

The line asking for tags should be something included in the question post so one post action can mean the end of the process.

Update May 2020: this is now implemented

This is a popular request and I’ve moved it on to to a GitHub issue so work can begin. I will update the post here when it is complete.

fwiw I think we will almost certainly let people add tags when they post questions — but I don’t think we will let the OP make up new tags. That at least should come from experienced users only I think

And I have a lot of sympthy with this. During my most active phase on BH.SE I surreptitiously took on the self-appointed role of Gate Keeper of the Tags, routinely ridding the site of silly ones. You begin to feel like the differentiated posting flow—one for experienced, “trusted” users, and one for newcomers—has something to commend it after all.

My thinking is that question posters are not necessarily the best question taggers — I imagine anyone posting an answer will tag correctly if it hasn’t already been handled by folk watching the new question list

@Caleb I find I’m simply forgetting that tagging questions is something that should be done when I’m posting (that is, really, after I’ve posted) a question. If it was integrated into a single-process “workflow”, I would find that a lot more intuitive. FWIW!

well you are immediately taken to the one place you can add tags when you post a question — I’m not sure selecting tags before posting the question would be any quicker.

Not requiring askers to tag their posts is one thing. Not letting me do it when I do know what tags are appropriate is another.

@Caleb just a FYI, it is not an accidental oversight that you currently can’t tag a question at that stage. We were toying with the idea of promoting tagging as a community action rather than part of the posting process as the OP often isn’t the best person to tag. However we are very open to discussing this and doing it a different way.
