transcript for The Nineteenth Byte
2020-01-24 11:51:37  Jack Douglas
This is a private beta of a new Code Golf Q&A community. We need to decide questions of scope and how much content to import from SE, along with various other things, before we go public. Please join in as you see fit!
2020-01-24 11:56:54  Adám
Thank you for this!
2020-01-24 11:57:06  Adám
@Jack Thank you for this!
2020-01-24 11:58:57  Jack Douglas  replying to  Adám
that's our pleasure — we hope it works out for everyone :)
2020-01-24 12:00:17  Jack Douglas
Posting 'meta' questions is done by selecting the dropdown in the header on the ask question page — people often miss that to start with so if a meta question is posted as a a normal question please just let me know and we can manually adjust.
2020-01-24 12:24:58  Adám
@Jack Can you take the favicon from [here]( for use as site icon instead of the current `≢` icon? This is also the icon used by Axtell.
2020-01-24 12:33:50  Jack Douglas  replying to  Adám
done, and I've also changed the room name — but feel free to chose something different
2020-01-24 12:33:56  Jack Douglas
it's a very clever name
2020-01-24 12:51:09  Adám
@Jack Can you force DejaVu Sans Mono for code on this site? Much of the anticipated content will not work well if a user has a different code font preference set.
2020-01-24 18:27:47  Jack Douglas
@Adám MathJax is working but not inline ($x = {-b \pm \sqrt{b^2-4ac} \over 2a}.$) yet — we are still figuring out why:
$$x = {-b \pm \sqrt{b^2-4ac} \over 2a}.$$
2020-01-24 18:28:25  Jack Douglas  replying to  Adám
we can do that — I'll let you know when it's implemented
2020-01-25 20:22:39  Adám
@Jack I noticed you changed the text of the posting button to just [ask]. Thank you for that. Maybe also change the [answer this question] to [answer this]?
2020-01-25 21:57:43  Jack Douglas  replying to  Adám
yes — I'm just thinking about whether that needs to be community-specific, in which case it might take slightly longer…
2020-01-26 00:36:51  Jack Douglas
MathJax is now working for inline equations but tbh we are going to need some help from someone who understands MathJax configuration at some point.
2020-01-26 19:30:19  Jack Douglas  replying to  Adám
we've tweaked it to "provide an answer", does that look ok to you?
2020-01-26 19:51:08  Adám  replying to  Jack Douglas
Yup. Perfect.
2020-01-26 20:16:21  Jack Douglas  replying to  Adám
DejaVu Sans Mono is now fixed for all CG users
2020-01-28 03:53:04  Bubbler
@Jack Is there a limit of # of answer activity that appears under a question?
2020-01-28 05:02:11  Bubbler
Also, in the answer preview, can you strip all Markdown stuff (e.g. `#`, `>`, brackets in `[Language name]`, and links) and just show plaintext?
2020-01-28 15:04:20  Jack Douglas  replying to  Bubbler
not yet, but we will surely need to change that at some point. Probably with an expandable secion at the bottom of the list to show more.
2020-01-28 15:45:05  Jack Douglas  replying to  Bubbler
we [have removed just the '#' chars for now](/meta?q=370#a363)
2020-01-28 19:13:53  Adám
@Adám :-D
2020-01-28 19:14:28  Adám
@Adám Yo!
2020-02-01 01:43:53  xnor
What would people think of a green background for us? I liked it for the SE color scheme.
2020-02-02 03:14:15  Lyxal  replying to  xnor
That sounds like a good idea. We should bring the green back
2020-02-02 07:51:13  Mathgeek
I wouldn' mind a dark green/black theme - keep the "golf" thematic, and it acts as pseudo-dark-theme.
2020-02-02 10:56:59  Jack Douglas
@xnor, @Lyxal, @Mathgeek please post any suggestions [here](/codegolf?q=667) and we'll implement the one with the highest votes
2020-02-03 06:49:50  Bubbler
I just noticed that the `[Language name]` answer headers are now correctly shown with links. Nice job.
2020-02-03 09:19:39  Lyxal
Hey @Jack, could you please add a feature that allows us to retag posts if needed. I know back over on CGCC we sometimes get our tags wrong, and I know I've recently tag a question incorrectly by accident over here.
2020-02-03 09:19:53  Lyxal
Thanks in advance!
2020-02-03 09:48:43  Adám  replying to  Lyxal
Not "retag", "re-type", i.e. change the post type. Tags can already be changed.
2020-02-03 17:47:37  Jack Douglas  replying to  Lyxal
the reason why this isn't a complete no-brainer is that different question types can have different voting rules. We can always just delete and re-post with the correct type, and alternatively, we are quite happy to do them manually if you ping us.
2020-02-03 17:48:39  Jack Douglas
please do vote on this meta post and perhaps add you comments there though:
2020-02-03 17:49:23  Jack Douglas
if enough people think it's a really important feature we'll look hard at finding a rational way to implement it
2020-02-04 10:04:22  Adám  replying to  Jack Douglas
How about allowing changing type as long as the post has no answers or votes? Only after that require mod intervention.
2020-02-04 14:46:54  Jack Douglas  replying to  Adám
yes that would work
2020-02-04 14:47:41  Jack Douglas
If you get a minute please could you post that suggestion on Caleb's meta question so it isn't forgotton
2020-02-06 04:52:31  Bubbler
@Jack Looks like link handling on answer headers is only partially working. (cf. my APL answer to "Directions on a Cartesian Plane")
2020-02-07 00:23:06  Jack Douglas  replying to  Bubbler
thanks for pointing that out @Bubbler, we have fixed that issue (it wasn't allowing reference links like `[foo]`, only with a space eg `[foo]:`, but both are valid)
2020-02-07 11:30:35  Bubbler  replying to  Jack Douglas
2020-02-07 17:16:24  Jack Douglas
@Adám I can't remember whether the origianl feature request was here in chat or in the SE chatroom but we've rolled out a form of 'table of contents' for answers, currently visible on 'Code Golf' questions (and 'Tips'). Can you let me know if you think it fits the bill?
2020-02-08 19:48:34  Adám  replying to  Jack Douglas
That functionality seems perfect. I don't see what harm it would do to have such ToCs universally though, and maybe restrict the number of answers on the main page listings. E.g. if there are more than four answers, list the three most popular ones with a fourth line saying "X more answers".
2020-02-09 13:35:08  Jack Douglas  replying to  Adám
currently the 'Meta' question type is used site-wide so changing it would change it on other communities as well. That may be a good thing but I'd like the other communities to have some exposure to the feature prior to rolling it out — and if Code Golf is going to go live any time soon, I thought that might be the best way of showing people what it looks like in practice.
2020-02-16 10:55:47  Adám
**Request for contributions:** We now have the scaffolding of [an "About" post](, but it needs fleshing out. I don't think we need to be as verbose as the various Meta posts on SE. A summary-style bulleted list like I've written for the loopholes should be enough for the other sections too. Please contribute some of your time to convert a set of SE Meta answers to a bullet list!
2020-02-16 15:17:09  Adám
@Jack Would it be possible to *not* have a default post type?
2020-02-16 18:37:03  Jack Douglas  replying to  Adám
just for this community you mean? I can see how that would make sense here …
2020-02-16 19:13:17  Adám  replying to  Jack Douglas
Right, it force attention on which type of post one is making, something that is absolutely critical here, and has huge implications.
2020-02-20 13:40:32  Mathgeek
I feel like we need another question to breathe a bit o life back in here, lemme go grab one
2020-02-20 23:00:49  Adám
**Request for contributions:** Our "About" post is [almost done]( Please contribute!
2020-02-25 10:41:11  Adám
**Announcement:** That's it — out basic set of information Wiki posts has been completed. Feel free to polish the posts!
2020-02-25 21:20:13  Adám
@Jack How hard is it to not have a default for the post type selector?
2020-02-25 21:49:18  Jack Douglas  replying to  Adám
should be reasonably easy I think
2020-02-25 21:49:41  Jack Douglas
feel free to add it to the 'before going public' list!
2020-02-25 22:10:10  Adám
@Jack ;-) When the list limit is counter-productive:
![Screenshot_2020-02-25 The Nineteenth Byte - TopAnswers.png](/image?hash=09263c939da1a406d3605923ef51e8e3fe645c30916e4dcdbaffb6e4ea693b65)
The interesting answers are those with no stars, while those with most stars are completed and thus not interesting.
2020-02-25 22:12:46  Jack Douglas  replying to  Adám
the fix would be 'no limit' or a different sort order (or even random sort), rather than a higher limit, right?
2020-02-25 22:12:54  Jack Douglas
I mean you might have dozens of answers
2020-02-25 22:14:16  Adám  replying to  Jack Douglas
Don't worry about it. It is an artifact of using the Q&A system for issue tracking. For normal posts, the system works fine. Although, for fairness, you may want to show more than 3 if 3rd place is tied.
2020-02-25 22:14:55  Adám
I could also flag the completed ones, which should remove them from the summary.
2020-02-25 22:16:07  Jack Douglas  replying to  Adám
nice to have them visible for 'historical interest' I think
2020-02-25 22:18:13  Adám  replying to  Jack Douglas
SE has the concept of a lock-but-preserve-for-historical-reasons, where a Q becomes a static page, not accepting any answers or edits. Anyway, these are luxury issues.
2020-02-25 22:19:41  Jack Douglas
It's nice for other communities to follow the example of CG, which is easier if the trajectory is visible — for example I cribbed the post here from the one on TeX
2020-02-25 22:20:03  Adám
2020-02-25 22:20:04  Jack Douglas
that's the only reason I don't want to be too quick to hide
2020-02-25 22:20:11  Jack Douglas
2020-02-25 22:20:34  Adám
Oh, you *are* really British. We're almost neighbours. I pass through Maidenhead on my way home from work.
2020-02-25 22:25:29  Jack Douglas
that's hilarious I had no idea

I work in Bramley, Hants (between Basingstoke and Reading). I now live in NE London. But I lived for a while in West Drayton. The Reading-West Drayton train of course stop in Maidenhead, but now I take the direct Reading-Paddington ones…
2020-02-25 22:51:25  Jack Douglas
that's a reverse commute
2020-02-25 22:55:07  Adám
Yeah, the West Drayton-Bramley commute was nice. Trains were mostly empty.
2020-02-25 23:00:03  Jack Douglas
I figure the built in HTML validation is good enough for the new 'choose post type' dropdown, do you agree?
2020-02-25 23:00:31  Jack Douglas
incidentally, the license stuff in the header will be changing soon
2020-02-25 23:03:17  Adám  replying to  Jack Douglas
Yes, that's plenty. I assume the server will reject invalid posts?
2020-02-25 23:04:52  Jack Douglas  replying to  Adám
you mean even if you force it to POST with the dev tools or something?

2020-02-25 23:07:16  Adám
Of course not. Garbage in, garbage out.
2020-02-25 23:07:58  Jack Douglas
in some edge cases that might matter and we will improve the error messages if need be (eg old browser that doesn't enforce validation)
2020-02-26 16:31:40  Adám
@Jack On SE, one leaves a note when editing a post, but not here. And I can't ping someone not in a room either. So how do I ask someone who edited my post why they did that?
2020-02-26 17:20:35  Jack Douglas  replying to  Adám
the post history shows who edited a post so both Οurous and Wheat Wizard can be seen as editors [here]( for example
2020-02-26 17:21:32  Jack Douglas
it would be better if there was a way to ping anyone who edits a post — perhaps by adding them to the list of identicons on the right as if they had chatted
2020-02-26 17:22:51  Jack Douglas
probably only for 14 days
2020-02-26 17:23:15  Jack Douglas
(ie the same length of time they'd appear if they had posted a comment
2020-02-26 17:39:48  Adám  replying to  Jack Douglas
Exactly, that's what I mean. But shouldn't post and answer authors be in the list permanently?
2020-02-26 18:20:37  Jack Douglas  replying to  Adám
they are already in the sense that you can get them from the 'comment' link under their post. I'm aware there might be a large number of answers to a question so ageing them off the list on the right seems like the right thing to do as that's really a 'recent' list
2020-02-27 12:54:39  Adám

2020-02-27 13:44:47  Hosch250
Just curious, though, if you think that the meta/wiki groups are flooding the home page and taking away from the challenges?
2020-02-27 13:45:07  Hosch250
There's just a single non-meta/wiki item on my home page, and it's the very last one.

2020-02-28 05:04:14  Dmitry Kudriavtsev

@all also a good suggestion — that one does need to go to meta to be voted on I think as I'm not certain everyone will agree (though it is common chat idiom)

2020-03-03 20:45:40  DJMcMayhem
Hmm, I just posted an answer for the first time, and I have some thoughts. 1) The "post" button while you're writing up your answer is not very obvious (took me a little while to find it) and 2) is there a reason you cannot comment on your own post?
2020-03-03 22:12:26  Jack Douglas  replying to  DJMcMayhem
re (1), we've now hidden the license controls and only show them on demand — how does that look to you?
2020-03-03 22:14:48  Jack Douglas
on (2), we are planning to tweak what the 'comment' link does. It will still ping the post author but by default will insert "re this answer" with a link to the answer
2020-03-03 22:15:32  Jack Douglas
if it was your own answer you are commenting on perhaps it would make sense for the text to read "re my answer"?
2020-03-03 22:20:47  DJMcMayhem
Oh, and 1 more question: What does "3 stars required to launch" mean?
2020-03-03 22:24:19  Jack Douglas  replying to  DJMcMayhem
This was a special request here — I think the idea is to act as a built-in sandbox so answers aren't allowed until the challenges get enough approval from the community. @Adám will be able to explain better than me :)

If we can make Code Golf more fun here than anywhere else we will surely succeed — but there is a bit of a chicken and egg, because we devs are more motivated to improve things the more activity there is!

2020-04-04 15:41:33  Jack Douglas  replying to  xnor
From our POV, we willing to invest the effort to improve codegolf.ta as long as folk here keep the site going. I don't know enough about the subject or about the community to know exactly what would make the site more attractive to golfers, so I'm relying on people here to tell us. For example, we'd like to integrate TIO or something similar here (though it may take some time as it isn't a trivial task), and we are thinking of adding something like an 'answer tag' for tagging answers with the language used.

If I understand correctly from things @Adám has said previously, creating good challenges is the most difficult thing. 2020-04-25 01:42:09  xnor  replying to  Jack Douglas
Sorry I totally forgot about this. I'm glad to see this site has gotten some next activity, and the new design looks great. I think there is indeed a chicken-and-eggs situation -- more than for Q&A sites, challenge sites need a good deal of activity. Question writers don't just want one good answer, but many, that justified the effort in writing a challenge, and solvers like a steady stream of challenges.
2020-04-25 01:44:09  xnor
As for wanting features, I feel like the tide has changed on CGSE to a more "survival mode" than when we had the meta posts about what features we'd like. Indeed, other golf sites seems to have less activity as well. For me, being able to tag, sort, and search answers by language would be the highest-leverage feature that doesn't require implementing something really major like an on-page code interpreter.
2020-04-25 01:45:44  xnor
I think the copying recent questions from SE is not encouraging me to participate. I already answered them there, so I don't see a point in re-posting my answer here too.
2020-04-25 01:48:49  xnor
I think new, quality challenges would be a draw for me and other CGSE regulars. With the lower SE activity, I feel like some people are not getting their fill.
2020-04-25 06:58:12  Jack Douglas  replying to  xnor
Thanks @xnor, we are actively planning an 'answer tag/label' feature that would be used for searching etc. I think you suggested that before somewhere which is why it was on the drawing board. It's really helpful to know what motivates challenge writers and answerers as this community is so different to the others

What do you think of enabling execution of code via TIO directly in chat? It'd be relevant for other programming sites too.
2020-04-28 20:46:05  Jack Douglas  replying to  Adám
Like we do with db<>fiddle? I'd very much like to do that.
2020-04-28 20:52:38  Adám  replying to  Jack Douglas
It doesn't even have to be that fancy, just a static one-off execution would be enough. Like `@@tio apl-dyalog ⎕←+/⍳10` entered into chat causes a special TIO user to respond with the output from [executing]( `⎕←+/⍳10` with the language [apl-dyalog](
2020-04-28 20:53:54  Adám
And maybe the ability to set up some per room and/or site aliases, so e.g. an APL room would use `⎕←` as a "macro" for `@@tio apl-dyalog ⎕←`
2020-04-28 20:55:25  Adám
While a Python room/site could alias `print(` to `@@tio python3 print(` and JS folks could use `console.log(` to mean `@@tio javascript-node console(`

2020-04-28 21:16:06  Adám  replying to  Jack Douglas
I asked about APL, and tbf, Dyalog does support TIO financially, but he also mentioned that no compensation is necessary as it'd anyway be a drop in the sea of traffic he sees.
2020-04-28 21:16:08  Jack Douglas
you mentioned the API is unofficial, do you have any docs for how it works or is it just a case or observing how the main TIO site interfaces with it's server?
2020-04-28 21:17:24  Adám  replying to  Jack Douglas
No docs, but plenty of implementations in various languages, including the JS of the site, and JS of our site. (His own site uses some private tokens that seem to only be accepted when the reques comes from his own site. However, generic tokens work fine.)

If you start playing with APL, there's a good chance you'll get addicted. Consider yourself warned.

I just spoke with one of my colleagues about an APL community here. He's new to TA (he's the Anonymous above) and would like to get a feel for the features. Would it be possible to create a closed beta APL community to begin with, while we hash out what our needs would be? They won't be many. The only thing we could think of was indeed TIO integration, and since we already have permission for that for APL, there should be no barrier. I can show you the JS needed.
2020-04-29 11:00:42  Adám  replying to  Jack Douglas
APL syntax colouring would be nice too, but not a must. (SE has it, but it isn't very good.)
2020-04-29 11:19:27  Adám
@Jack Is it just me, or has [Community]( reverted to to wear a $\TeX$ hat again?
2020-04-29 11:49:15  Jack Douglas  replying to  Adám
yes, certainly, I'll let you know when that is ready
2020-04-29 11:53:10  Adám  replying to  Jack Douglas
How will we pick theme colours? It seems you went by the colours used in the official logo, but APL doesn't have one official logo, only one for each *implementation*. (And I suppose it should be a general APL community, not e.g. specific to Dyalog APL.)
2020-04-29 12:06:36  Jack Douglas  replying to  Adám
it's generally up to the community what colours you have, so I just pick some default colours to start with. Would you like me to set something neutral until you decide between you what you want?

They already have Q which is quite related (a cousin's child). It doesn't look very difficult at all. APL is quite simple.

We just had an "all-hands" meeting, and we're very interested in this. Possibly with even more integration, e.g. to APL documentation.

that's great @Adám — I've set up the community as a private beta and added you both as members. I've been experimenting with syntax highlighting using a different library which seems like it might be acceptable. It's active only in the APL community though if it works well we may roll it out elsewhere eventually.

@Jack if the root message in a nested set is deleted, i'm curious if that's sufficient to clean up all the child references? in this case the colorful if somewhat intrusive spam seeded from here

2020-05-14 14:04:30  Jack Douglas
the best way to get more active here in my opinion, is for chat rooms here to be more attractive than chat on SE or discord and to then persuade groups of golfers who hang out in chat in those places anyway, to chat here instead

we can obviously create more site rooms for that as necessary

I can't, it's due to a problem in the local Internet. Discord will never load under that Internet.

the threading there is underrated — Slack, Teams, Discord etc just don't seem to get threads
