6 Messages use a single namespace: the same is true for e.g. colours and keys. These are always local assignments. So I woudl favour `\msg_set:nn(nn)` over `\msg_gset:nn(nn)`.

12 As the documentation says, variables should be either _assigned_ locally or globally. However, `expl3` _declares_ all variables globally. I suspect the confusion arises as you are seeing `\<thing>_new:N` as an assignment, which while true at the underlying engine level is not what we mean in the documentation when we talk about the _programmer_ making an assignment.

11 You got the `\cs_new:Npn` one wrong. TeX only ever has consecutive numeric parameters for macros, `\cs_new:Npn` doesn't change that. Keep in mind that under the hood the "functions" of `expl3` are macros (plus a few primitives), the differentiation between "function" and "variable" is just for the reader to have a better idea of when to use what (well, I don't know the initial intention of the differentiation, but it boils down to that, imho).

However, perhaps @Skillmon sees this and tells us what to do, and perhaps updates the pgf manual.) Note also that all this is very similar to the `simpler-wick` package except of course that you do not want to use macros like `\c`. If you want to consider using `\c` instead of `<` and `>`, one could use the `simpler-wick`

17 That's because internally `\cs_split_function:N` will hit your control sequence with `\string`, so all tokens (except spaces) will be catcode 12, but the `_` in `expl3` code is catcode 11 (and outside it's normally catcode 7), so `\seq_set_split:Nnn` won't find the “the letter \_” token. You need to turn `_` into a “string”, by using `\token_to_str:N _` or `\tl_to_str:n { _ }`.
