There is [a user script for SE chat](https://github.com/TehFlaminTaco/TacosUserscripts/raw/master/caretreply.user.js) that allows one to mark one's chat message as a reply to the previous chat message by beginning one's message with `^`, the second-to-last message by prefixing with `^^`, etc. This would be really nice to have on TA, so one doesn't need to click to reply.

If I decided not to send my ping message, how do I clear it, if you choose the later option?

What happens if you have 1 ^ and a new message comes in? Now when you press backspace, does it clear the ping or just move it down to the new message?

I guess pressing `^` could actually set the ping and *not* type the character. Pressing `^` again would change the ping upwards, and pressing backspace would change it downwards. No clash there, since the cursor is at the very left edge of the input field.

@Adám what happens if another message is posted while you are typing or at the same time as you post? I assume on SE you just have to live with that, but here perhaps we could do something better like indicate the message you are replying to and keep track of it as new messages come in?
